Macon, GA, and other parts of the world (sample of work)
Maryann Bates is an award-winning photographer based in Macon, Georgia who has been practicing her art and profession for over 30 years.
With a background in photojournalism, Maryann is dedicated to capturing the stories of her subjects - and making her subjects at ease in sharing their stories.
“Working for years in photojournalism taught me to be observant, patient and extremely adaptable,” she says. “Photo shoots seldom go exactly as planned and you need to be able to adjust.”
It’s her ability to connect that has made Maryann a sought-after photographer for commercial and portrait projects but also for collaborative multi-media projects that involve entire production teams. She has been an on-set photographer for multiple nationally recognized film projects and advertising campaigns.
Maryann’s career photojournalism earned her a Pulitzer nomination. But she also takes pride in her work as artistic expression. Her photography book “Angels of Macon” was published in 2007. She has also contributed her work to multiple photography art projects and coffee table publications.
Maryann maintains a studio in Downtown Macon and has traveled throughout the country for her work. As a seasoned freelancer, she’s yet to lose the passion that drives her work.
“What makes me most proud, professionally, is when clients turn into friends and are happy with the work I do for them, and then we end up doing even more work together,” she says. “I travel any chance I get, for work and for play, and can pack my camera gear and be out the door in record-breaking time.”
Maryann is also, according to her four kids, an award-winning mother and now grandmother. She and her husband Larry have been married since they were both “babies” (she admits with a smile).
“I firmly believe that life is good and it's even better when you have the photos to prove it,” she says.
